Hospital Services
Carolina Pines RMC – Pristine and Proud to Serve

Originally known as Byerly Hospital, we began as a small clinic built in 1933 for the people of Hartsville. In 1968 we were a free-standing hospital with four nursing units and 55 beds, and in 1976 our services were managed by Hospital Corporation of America and by 1983 approximately 19,300 square feet of new space had been added.

In August of 1995, hospital officials and our board signed an agreement with Health Management Associates (NYSE: HMA) based in Naples, FL, to take ownership, and funds from the sale, an estimated $25 million, was used to establish the Byerly Foundation, which provides grant money to numerous local educational and community projects. In July of 1997 a ground-breaking ceremony was held for our new $44.5 million dollar regional medical center and in May of 1999 Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center became a reality as the doors were opened to our first patients.

  • Today our 116-bed hospital and medical campus provide complete, modern, comprehensive health services – our pristine facilities are filled with dedicated staff that is proud to serve a community we love.

The commitment to our careers is founded upon our skill, experience, compassion for neighbors we interact
with outside of the hospital, how we mentor our staff, and how we get along!

A Community Hospital: Some believe “community hospitals” are what the original hospitals in America were founded upon: service and care provided to neighbors and along with that the acceptance by physicians and employees of being highly-respected and appreciated members of their service areas who are also accountable, and live their lives as part of their towns. Before choosing Carolina Pines we decided that we wanted to live in and serve an area that is close-knit, with neighbors who have concern for each other, where faces are recognizable. Where schools are taught by people who also attend our church or are members of a civic club to which we belong – or an adult softball team!

  • Although we appreciate certain benefits that can be in large urban centers, we believe a better quality of living and working is one of less stress and a sense of peacefulness vs. big city traffic, crime, bureaucracies, long lines, and noise and smog pollution. And big city suburbs all look the same. We want to live in a community with a history that we can embrace.

Why Carolina Pines and Hartsville? As you tour our community and met our neighbors, we hope you can tell why we adore life here. Our careers are growing in a hospital that is newer with administrators focused on obtaining modern facilities and services that challenge us to grow professionally that are also great for our patients. We offer a one-of-a-kind community and a growing hospital campus to you – we believe the combination of Hartsville and the lifestyle it offers along with our hospital, presents a compelling career opportunity! We appreciate your interest!

Our Values

  • Excellence – continually improving everything we do
  • Commitment – showing pride in, loyalty to, and ownership of the mission of Carolina Pines
  • Mutual Respect – doing unto others as you would have them do unto you
  • Stewardship – carefully and responsibly managing the resources of Carolina Pines
  • Sound Judgment – making timely decisions based on the information available
  • Integrity – Never compromising the absolutes; honesty, trustworthiness and ethical behavior.

Other Hospitals in our Region: Our focus and practice model is to serve the residents in our immediate and extended service area with the services we provide while we strive to grow them and add more. Many small communities do not have the amenities that we have in Hartsville, and while we may need to go there now and then, Florence is generally recognized as the “hub” in the Pee Dee multi-county region of central South Carolina to the coast due to its larger population and location on I-95 and I-20. Two larger hospitals larger than Carolina Pines are in Florence: McLeod Regional Medical Center competes with Carolinas Medical Center in that market to our east.

We appreciate these hospitals particularly because they provide some services that we do not, and this is good for all residents of our region. We also appreciate they compete against each other, which keeps both motivated to provide an optimum level of healthcare to our neighbors in the region.

“As busy professionals gain experience, they begin to appreciate the value of time to pursue their outside interests and be with their families. Hartsville has the amenities our family desires while I am 5 minutes to the hospital, to kids’ functions, to the lake and to the gym. If your drive is longer than 5 minutes, something’s wrong!” – Lance Jones

“Because Sonoco and Progress Energy transfer employees, and due to Coker College, as well as the Governor’s School which attracts student from all over the state, Hartsville is accustomed to and very open to new families. In other communities, relationships are sometimes difficult to establish due to circles already in existence. Everyone we met was very polite and helpful to our family during our transition.” – Michael Cherry

Selected Department Directors:

“I believe most of the employees here enjoy truly being a part of the community we serve. On many occasions I have formed relationships with patients when l would brush their hair for them at bedside or make a phone call for them or just hold their hand and talk. I appreciate the opportunity to have experiences with people in my hometown. What a wonderful feeling it is to see them later when they recognize me, hug my neck and thank them for caring. Overall I love making a positive difference – this makes life so fulfilling.” – Rebecca Haire

“Although another hospital in our region actually paid my college tuition, I chose not to work there after considering that my options there were limited, and my heart was not in adult ICU where they wanted me to work. I had to pay them back for not pursuing my career there – and it was the best career decision I have ever made.” – Michelle Hood

“My son Tanner, 11, is the best child you could be around. He is always thoughtful of others around him. He once came home from kindergarten without a coat, because he had given it to a little girl in his class that did not have a coat. I don’t want him to ever change.” – Charlotte Adams

Staff Member Testimonials

“I have great memories of being a student here and how the staff was patient and gave me one-on-one instruction. There was no real reason for them to help me but they did – I figured it was because they were truly good people and that they also wanted the best for their patients. I have since found both to be true.” – Sonya Wilson
